Hebrew is the world-wide most cited example for language revival. Having been spoken in the Land of Canaan until around 600 BC, the language ceased to be used in daily life, probably because of the dominance of Aramaic in the area, as well as the Babylon captivity of the intelligentsia. Hebrew was, and is, however still used among as a liturgical language in Jewish parishes.
During the 18th century, when the dream of a Jewish state became popular, the language was first revived as a literary language among Jews in European cities, and soon followed as a spoken language among Jewish aliyah settlers in Palestine. When Tel Aviv was founded in 1909, Modern Hebrew was already spoken on its street.
