Danish differs from its sister languages Norwegian and Swedish through its phonology whose most prominent feature is probably the stød (‘push’), a prosodic feature sometimes realized as a glottal stop, sometimes more like a creaky voice.

Due to its immediate vicinity to the West Germanic language area, Danish is the one of the Scandinavian languages that was the most influenced by the Low German of the Hanseatic League during medieval times. Nowadays, Danish is a mandatory subject at schools on the Faroe Islands and Greenland (both parts of the Kingdom of Denmark), and on Iceland.

Nordenvinden og Solen skændtes om, hvilken af dem der var den stærkeste, da en rejsende kom gående forbi, iført en varm jakke.
De blev enige om, at den der kunne få manden til at tage sin jakke af, han skulle anses for at være stærkere end den anden.
Først blæste Nordenvinden med al sin kraft, men jo mere han blæste, desto tættere trak manden sin jakke omkring sig, og til sidst opgav Nordenvinden sit forsøg.
Så skinnede Solen varmt, og straks tog den rejsende mand sin jakke af.
Nordenvinden var nu nød til at erkende at Solen havde vundet, og var den stærkeste af de to.
