During the last millenium, Persian has enjoyed the status of literary and/or administrative language in several countries and empires, including the Persian empire (Iran), Afghanistan, the Ottoman empire and the Moghul empire, which has led to many Persian loanwords in languages like Hindi, Urdu, Turkish, Uzbek, Pashto and Armenian.

Persian of today is characterized by a diglossia, where the spoken vernacular to a great extent differs from the written standard, which, on the other hand, to a great extent agree with the grammar of classical Persian, making it easy for Persophones to enjoy the poetry of e.g. Hafez, written more than 600 years ago.

The varieties of Persian spoken in Iran and Afghanistan respectively differs in terms of phonology and vocabulary. The Tajik language, used mostly in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, can also be seen as a variety of Persian.
