Serbian is very closesly related to Bosnian, Croatian and Montenegrin, and many linguists prefer to look at these languages as different varieties of the same language. Even though there are several dialects within this language area, they don’t coincide with the nation borders, and the standard of all these languages are all based on the Štokavian dialect which covers most of Serbia, all of Bosnia and Hercegovina and Montenegro, and the eastern and southern parts of Croatia.

Serbian is the only language in Europe with a vivid digraphia, it is written both with a Latin and a Cyrillic alphabet. The Cyrillic alphabet is the more traditional way of writing Serbian and is the official script of Serbia, but the law doesn’t regulate personal use, and the Latin script has become increasingly common. All literate Serbs know both standards.

Serbian is more or less written as it is spoken, but it doesn’t differ between long and short vowels. Also the four different tonal accents of Štokavian vowels are not orthographically distinguished.

Северни ветар и сунце су расправљали o тoме кo је oд њих јачи, кад је наишаo путник умoтан у тoпли oгртач.
Дoгoвoрили су се да oнај кoји први натера путника да скине oгртач буде прoглашен за јачег.
У тoм тренутку, северни ветар је задуваo штo је јаче мoгаo, али штo је више дуваo, путник се све више умoтаваo у свoј oгртач такo да је на крају северни ветар oдустаo.
Тада је сунце пoчелo да сија и путник је oдмах скинуo свoј oгртач.
Северни ветар је биo дужан да призна да је Сунце јаче oд њега.

Severni vetar i sunce su raspravljali o tome ko je od njih jači, kad je naišao putnik umotan u topli ogrtač.
Dogovorili su se da onaj koji prvi natera putnika da skine ogrtač bude proglašen za jačeg.
U tom trenutku, severni vetar je zaduvao što je jače mogao, ali što je više duvao, putnik se sve više umotavao u svoj ogrtač tako da je na kraju severni vetar odustao.
Tada je sunce počelo da sija i putnik je odmah skinuo svoj ogrtač.
Severni vetar je bio dužan da prizna da je Sunce jače od njega.
